In 1590, the copper refining business was started in Kyoto, and this is the beginning of the「Sumitomo Metal Mining」. they grew up as a mining company while conducting business such as Ani Copper Mine and Yoshioka Mine.  In 1691, this company started to develop the Besshi Copper Mine, which eventually became the world's largest copper mine and became the foundation of the present Sumitomo Group.

Since the 1960s, 「Sumitomo Metal Mining」has greatly expanded the import amount of copper ore from overseas. In order to secure stable resources, they have also been actively engaged in mine development business in foreign countries. On the other hand, this company also conducted refining and processing the raw materials to produce high value-added products. With all this effort,「Sumitomo Metal Mining」become a global company with a production and sales system overseas.
