2. Summary and Features

 
After World War II, GHQ temporarily prohibited aircraft operations in Japan. In 1952, when this ban was lifted,「Far East Airlines(極東航空株式会社)」and「Japan Helicopter and Aeroplane Transports Company(日本ヘリコプター輸送株式会社)」were established. And this two companies is the origin of「All Nippon Airways 」.

「Far East Airlines」is based in Osaka and concentrates on air transportation in the western Japan region, while 「Japan Helicopter Transportation」has its main helicopter transportation business centering on Tokyo. In 1958, both companies were integrated accoding to the Air transportation unification policy by Japan Ministry of Transport. At that time of beginning,「All Nippon Airways」had the largest domestic route network in Japan.

Then, during the period of high economic growth, demand for domestic aviation was increased rapidly. 「ANA」 aggressively introduced the latest model "Boeing 727" to expand the supply. At the same time, as a result of aggressively promoting M & A for small and medium-sized airlines, it overwhelmed「Japan Airlines Co., Ltd.(日本航空)」in 1979 .

 

Currently,「ANA」has the industry's largest route network for domestic routes in Japan. As for the international flights, they mainly serve Asia, Europe, and the United States. In Japan, it is the only company that can compete equally with「Japan Airlines(日本航空)」, and both companies are often referred to as "Full Service Carriers".

However, since「JAL」got critically damaged in 2010 due to the excess of bad debt,「ANA」surpassed「JAL」in consolidated sales, and became No.1 Japanese air transportation company, and it is one of the top 10 airline in the world. In addition to the scale, their service quality is also extremely high, maintaining the airline's highest level of "5 Star" for five consecutive years.

Currently,「JAL」has high dependency in passenger transportation business. In sales, domestic passenger transportation accounts 45%, and international passenger transportation is 33%. On the other hand, the international freight transportation account about 10%. However, the profits are fairly stable because they are the  one top airline in the Japanese aviation industry. In addition,「ANA」 is also conducting various business such as airport ground support, aircraft maintenance and aircraft pilot training. Recently, LCC airlines such as「Peach Aviation」and「Vanilla Air Inc.」have been incorporated into the affiliated companies of「ANA」.
