Since「Tobu Railway(東武鉄道)」was founded in 1895, it has the oldest history of any major Japanese private railway. The name "Tobu" comes from "eastern part of Musashikuni(武蔵国)". Among the many private railway companies that were established in the Meiji era, the companies that still survive today are only「Tobu Railway」,「Ohmi Railway(近江鉄道)」and「Shimabara Railroad(島原鉄道)」.

 

In 1920,「Tobu Railway」merged with「Tobu Tojo Main Line(東上本線)」. This merger is the only equal merger in their history. During the World WarⅡ,「Tobu Railway」merged other railway companies based on the "Land Transport Business Coordination Act(陸上交通事業調整法)". As a result of this mergers,  the total operation distance reached 591.6km. After that, some of their local line was abolished. So from 2005, in Japanese private railway company ,「Tobu Railway」 has 2nd longest total operation distance with 436.3km after「Kintetsu Railway(近畿日本鉄道)」.

The railway lines of「Tobu Railway」are roughly divided into ["Tobu Isesaki Line(伊勢崎線)", "TOBU SKYTREE Line(東武スカイツリーライン)", "Nikkō Line(日光線)" and "Tobu Noda Line(東武野田線)"] and ["Tojo Line(東上線)" which is composed of "Tobu Tojo Main Line(東武東上本線)", " Tobu Ogose Line(東武越生線)"] . Since the both railroads are not connected directly, the transfer of vehicles is carried out by「Chichibu Railway(秩父鉄道)」.
