2. Summary and Features

「Kuraray」was established by the Ohara Family to diversify the business of「Kurashiki Spinning(倉敷紡績)」. Nowadays, the relationship with「Kurashiki Spinning」is only a business level, and there is no longer any capital relationship. From its establishment, Kuraray was a textile-related company. In 1950, they released the world's first commercialization of "Vinylon", a polyvinyl alcohol fiber, the first domestic synthetic fiber in Japan.

Looking at the sales composition ratio of Kuraray, the textile business accounted for approximately 80% until 1985. But this has fallen to 25% in 2009. At the same time, chemical sales accounted for only 20% in 1985, but they are now up to 75%. In other words, the corporate structure is changing from the textile business to the chemical business. In 2007, to reflect this trend, the company's affiliation in the stock market was changed from "textile products" to "chemical".

Currently, the main products are POVAL (PVA), a functional resin that「Kuraray」has commercialized for the first time in the world, and POVAL Film (PVA Film), an application of this. Besides, there is wide range of chemical product they can handle. The company also operates a medical business including dental materials, and also supports environmentally related businesses such as water treatment materials and waste water treatment PVA.

Kuraray's business, which has recently attracted attention, is the jacket business. This company announced that it has jointly developed with「WIN Human Recorder Co., Ltd.」 to develop a wearable jacket equipped with an electrically controlled air conditioner. Prototype sales are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2020. Basically, this jacket worn on a T-shirt has a cooling function of about -5 to -15 ° C against the external temperature, and it can be operated for 2 to 4 hours with one charge.
