「Ajinomoto Co., Inc. (味の素)」is one of the largest seasoning manufacturer in Japanese market. It is a global company with group companies and factories worldwide as well as in Japan. 2. Summary and Features
「Suzuki Pharmaceutical(鈴木製薬所)」, founded in 1909, is its predecessor. "Ajinomoto" was the name of first chemical seasoning that was developed by Suzuki Pharmaceutical. Since it was released, this company changed its name to「Ajinomoto(味の素)」. However, this "Ajinomoto" was not popular product from the beginning. Rather, at the time of its release, the concept of chemical seasoning did not exist, so it did not sell well.
At that time, when Suzuki, the founder, went out to Osaka for sales promotion activities, he noticed that udon was established as a food culture. However, this udon juice was basically a taste of kelp, so it was a good target for selling "Ajinomoto", which uses kelp as a raw material. In this way, they started selling it to udon shops and high-end restaurants.
At present, there is no one on the right side of "Ajinomoto" in the field of seasonings. "Ajinomoto" is still sold in more than 100 countries around the world and is used not only for cooking but also as a raw material for food. However, the chemical seasoning business is not all of「Ajinomoto」.
Their business has been gradually expanding in the order of edible oil (1935), soup (1962), mayonnaise (1968), frozen food (1972), and now it operates in a total of 12 fields. In particular, since launching the "Knorr" brand with the American food company「Unilever」in 1964, it has led the Japanese instant soup market.
In addition, this company have very high technical skills in amino acids, and they are adapting to various products such as supplements and feeds utilizing this amino acid. In japan, only「Kyowa Hakko Kirin Co., Ltd. (協和発酵キリン)」can be comparable with them in the field of amino acids. Besides, 「Ajinomoto」are also engaged in the chemical and pharmaceutical businesses that utilize amino acid production technology, and are taking advantage of this to launch the cosmetic brand "Jino".
One of the major features of「Ajinomoto」is that they are very active in overseas expansion. The current sales composition ratio is about 48% in Japan, with Asia (23%), the Americas (21%) and Europe (8%). In other words, overseas sales account for more weight than sales in Japan. In Indonesia and Brazil, sales are growing at a very high rate, and overseas performance is expected to increase further in the future.
